View iPad-Ready Websites via Your Desktop Browser

If you are still waiting for your iPad to arrive or wish to test whether your website looks good on the iPad there is an easy way to do it.

Why does iPads see a website differently

When you visit a website the server receives the user-agent string from your browser that you are using and can then provide the content tailored to your device.

This is great because webmasters can change websites or provide plugins which allow the website to display in the best way for your particular device.

Why Spoof your User-agent-string?

Now something that is different with the iPad is that there are quite a number of great iPad webapps like the new Google webapp for iPad which includes features only available on the iPad, so instead of downgrading the application for the device, it is actually an upgrade.

To take advantage of the iPad’s large display, we’ve created a two-pane view with your list of conversations on the left and messages to the right.

Additionally you can also view any of the iPad-ready websites on your desktop.

How to Spoof the User Agent String to view iPad version of Website

The easiest way we’ve found is to spoof your Browsers user Agent string is as below:

  • use Firefox as your browser
  • Download the User Agent Switcher add-on
  • Create a new user agent profile for the iPad as below:
    • For “App Code Name” field probvide ‘iPad.’
    • For “App Name field” provide ‘Mobile Safari’
    • For the ‘App Version’ field add in ‘5.0 (Macintosh; en-US)’

This will provide the server with the following User Agent String, basically fooling the server into providing you the iPad version if available
    Mozilla/5.0(iPad; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B314 Safari/531.21.10

Add-on to allow HTML5 Video on Firefox

When you are using Fiewfox however viewing HTML5 video may be a problem depending on whether Firefox has started supporting H.264 codec or still only supports the license-free Theora format instead of H.264).

The Solution is really simple and easy and works great:

Watch HTML5 YouTube Videos in Firefox (on Windows)

    1. Install the IE Tab Firefox extension (or one of the other IE-in-Firefox extensions).
    2. Install Google Chrome Frame for IE.
    3. In the IE Tab preferences inside Firefox, set YouTube to always open inside an IE Tab (see image below).

Using the techniques above you can easily preview and use the iPad versions of websites, webapps and test your websites if you are a developer.

If you have been paying attention to the excited chatter about the iPad, then you have probably know that one of discussed issues is how the internet will look on the iPad without Flash.

Well one thing is for sure – SlideShare will look snazzy. It’s still being tinkered with, and is in beta, but we expect SlideShare to be iPad friendly soon.

To check out the Beta, just click on a presentation link – give us feedback – tell us what you would like.

Rest assure, SlideShare will go everywhere you want to take your presentations.

If you haven’t heard of www.Slideshare.net yet, it is a trule remarkable service where you can upload your Keynote or Microsoft Powerpoint presentations and easily share them around the world.

I’ve done this before with Google Docs, but Slideshare seems to be easier to use and you get a lot more views from your presentation due to the community surrounding the site.

Below is a presentation from Slideshare that I thought would be fitting:

iPad camera A and Camera B

iPad Camera by using an App?

The iPad has a SD-Card reader add-on called Camera Connector which supports a number of devices and allows you to easily transfer pictures from your high quality Digital camera’s to make up for the fact that it doesn’t have an inbuilt camera.

Now for those of you who already have a iPhone and don’t necessarily wish to connect a high quality camera to the iPad and play around with a $1 app, here’s your chance.
In the video below Chris Perillo shows us how he uses the App called Camera A and Camera B written by Vanishlab which allows you to connect your iPhone via bluetooth and save the picture either to your iPhone or to your iPad.

The App connects over bluetooth and is still very much in development so will hoefully improve the frame rate with updates.

if you are having any problems with the App simply follow this procedure:

Turn off WiFi., when enabling Bluetooth

The WiFi and Bluetooth radios operate on the same frequency band and share an antenna. Turning off WiFi ensures that the maximum bandwidth is available to the Bluetooth connection.

Alternatively you can turn off Bluetooth and turn on Wifi.

The Youtube video below had already had over 800 000 views at the time of this writing,
It shows just like the iPhone, that the iPad is naturally easy to use, but it is interresting to see just how quickly the 2.5 year old learns how to switch between applications.

Fisher Price has already come up with a Tablet style toy to emulate and iPad

Fisher-Price has been watching Apple closely and this week will introduce its own iPad-inspired device for children, the iXL.

The iXL offers photo, ebook, music playback, games, an art studio and e-notebook all inside its robust body. Set to cost $79.99, the system launches at this week’s Toy Fair in New York and to the public in July.

But concidering just how robust the iPad is, it won’t be long before they start developing more applications for the iPad specifically for the Educational Toy market.

iPad and iPhone OS 4.0 jailbroken « Icrontic Tech

iPad and iPhone OS 4.0 jailbroken « Icrontic Tech

iPad and iPhone OS 4.0 jailbrokenCompeting developers iPhone DevTeam and Geohot have announced preliminary successes in jailbreaking iPhone OS 4.0 and the iPad, respectively.

The iPhone DevTeam cracked the developer preview of iPhone OS 4.0 less than a week after its announcement at Apple’s April 8 event in Cupertino, CA. Like all jailbreaks before it, the DevTeam will eventually release an automated utility like PwnageTool for users looking to break free of Apple’s walled garden and tap into Cydia, the unofficial app store, as well as the many new and unique features made possible by an open iPhone.

Video of Jailbroken iPad

We all knew the day would come, but I didn’t expect it to be so early.

Either Apple has realized that Developers and Highly Advanced users LOVE jailbreaking devices and didn’t improve their anti-jailbreaking measures, or one of the jailbreaking Gods must have an inside man.

Either way, we are glad this has happened and looking forward to testing, running and possibly breaking some apps on the new iPad.
