How to Encrypt Your iPhone Backups

Encrypt Your iPhone Backups for Convenience, Not Just Security

Considering that most of use nowadays walk around with a lot of private information on our devices, it makes sense for us not only to protect the iphone with a passcode, but also to protect your Backup stored on your computer (hopefully a Mac) by ticking the Encrypt iPhone backup.

This is EXTREMELY easy to do, simply:

  • Right Click on your iPhone inside iTunes
  • Click on Backup
  • Tick the encrypt iPhone Backup tickbox.

iPhone: Checking the option to encrypt your iPhone when backing up with iTunes will not only increase the security of that data, it will also make restoring more convenient by remembering your Encrypted Mobile Me and email passwords.

Marco Arment, creator of web page-saving service Instapaper, gives us another reason to encrypt our iPhone backups:

You should encrypt your backups, if not for security reasons, for a big convenience gain: encrypted backups will include your email and Mobile Me passwords so you never need to re-enter them after a restore. (emphasis added)

In case you don’t already know, you’ll find the checkbox option to encrypt the backup in the iTunes summary screen. Be sure you remember the encryption password!

This tip is also valid for your iPad or other Future iOS devices you will have.

Nokia Store sucks at Photoshop uses iPhone Screenshot

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_piotb

It seems that someone working for ESPN F1 Nokia App had to get a nice screenshot of the website running on a mobile phone, and believe it or not, it is definitely a iPhone Screenshot that was used. So much for proofreading.

Questions1: Why do Nokia call their software apps? It was never called apps until Apple launched the “App Store”. Everyone else referred to the programs as JAR files…) on their .mobi websites.
The copying never stops.

Remote iPhone Network Unlocking Websites

Unlock your iPhone websites?

Unlocking, Not to be mistaken for jail breaking (which only allows you to install non-authorised apps), is the process to free your iPhone to use on another mobile phone carrier/provider/company

A number of websites have begun offering customers the ability to have their iPhones unlocked remotely for use on any network without requiring that the devices be jailbroken. As noted by prominent iPhone hacker MuscleNerd, the procedure seems to involve accessing Apple’s database to directly add IMEI device identifiers for unlocking.

they’re not using a hack. They’re using actual access to the Apple database (which is why the unlock happens through iTunes)

Cut Your Sim was the first to gain attention for the service, charging $169.99 for a device unlock. The site does, however, appear to be working through a third party to perform the unlocking rather than performing it directly themselves. Several other sites (1, 2, 3) are offering similar services priced in the $170-$180 range. It is unclear, however, whether they are operating independently or if they are all working with the same party that has decided to offer the service to various storefronts while remaining silent behind the scenes.

Adding a device’s IMEI to Apple’s database for unlocked iPhones should in theory permanently unlock the device, although the company could conceivably find a way to identify those entries that had been made improperly and remove them, rendering those devices re-locked once they again sync with iTunes. Consequently, most of the sites offering unlocking services are failing to guarantee that the unlock will be permanent, although they are advertising it as such.

Note: iPhones owners who want to have their iPhones unlocked without jail-breaking should be cautious of small websites claiming to offer such services, (until we’ve tested a few), and should investigate the legitimacy of any offerings they consider purchasing.

Use iPad 2 as Digital Whiteboard

Ever wanted to easily explain a concept (like you could on a piece of paper?) or give a whiteboard presentation without having a whiteboard at hand?

Well, Fraser Spiers (who was tired with his classroom whiteboards being worn out) shows you how to the iPad2 as a Digital whiteboard.

Here’s what you’ll need:

The AluPen is really chunky. It’s almost like a digital marker pen.

So, what does iPad + Penultimate + AluPen get you? It gets you a digital whiteboard with infinite pages and undo. The beauty of this is that you get to keep every whiteboard you draw during the lesson. You can flip between whiteboards and go forward and backwards and insert new pages in between the others. It’s really kind of remarkably powerful.

Penultimate: Choose a Page

What is also great is that at the end of the presentation you can save all the slides as one PDF or send the images to Evernote via email to use OCR to convert the handwritten notes to searchable text.

iPhone Tip: How to reset Your iPhone auto-correct dictionary

Some iPhone users will have been frustrated after your iPhone “learned” a incorrect correction in its auto-correct keyboard dictionary.

You might also be curious as how to reset this autocorrect dictionary? Worried you might have a damnyouautocorrect moment when SMS’ing that important contact?

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a way of editing the keyboard dictionary entries but if your iPhone has learned to auto-correct a word that is incorrect, there’s an easy way to fix it.

Currently your only option is to reset the discionary. Not ideal, but it does fix any incorrect entries the iphone, iPad or iPod may have learned.

  • Tap on Settings> General> Reset
  • Tap Reset Keyboard Settings.
  • Your keyboard dictionary will reset back to factory default.

For most people this won’t really be a big loss, but if you type in a couple of different languages (like a large part of the world does) you do loose out quite a number of learned words if you reset it this way.

Charlie and the Apple factory [Apple Humour]

This Video definitely cracked me up. Being a Apple fan (for some of the reasons shown in the comedic video) I was impressed with the fact that the video “get’s it”.. In other words: The reason why Apple products sell so well, is because they have created a CULTURE. Something which you just don’t really see with Microsoft products.

Charlie and the Apple factory – College Humor

You have to admire the colossal amount of work that went into this imaginative homage to Charlie and the Chocolate factory, even if the humour hasn’t exactly got us in ROTFLMAO mode. In fact, we haven’t even managed a ROTFL, but then that might be because it’s a Monday and we’re grumpy

AirPlay Apps to Play Your Computer Movies on iPhone and iPad

With the launch of iOS4.3 we will enter a new era of how you share and present your Video and Photo’s on your iPhone and iPad. Meaning someone can continue working on the computer, while you are watching the movies or video files you have stored on your computer ON your iPhone or iPad.

The Recent release of AirPlay already allowed you to play video’s or Photo’s from your iPhone / iPad or iPod touch on your Apple TV, but with the release of iOS4.3 Streaming Video from your Computer to your iPhone and iPad is simplified, and thus a couple of apps have already appeared in iTunes which do just that.

AirPlay apps to play video from your computer

AirPlay-enabled apps are beginning to trickle out ahead of iOS 4.3′s imminent launch, which will be on Friday, March 11 at the latest (if not today). Tuesday morning, Air Video, which lets you stream video from your computer to any iOS device remotely, got AirPlay support, making it incredibly easy to keep your entire personal movie collection with you at all times. The only downside of Air Video is it only works if your collection is stored locally on your own Mac. If you depend on subscription services to scratch your video itch, you may find yourself left out of the party.

Air Video isn’t the only remote video streaming app to get AirPlay support. StreamToMe also recently updated its app to include AirPlay support for iOS 4.3 users. I prefer Air Video because it can function both as a streaming and remote conversion tool, as it is creating a second, streaming-optimized  file which can be automatically added to your iTunes library for later use.

The Article also discusses why Apps associated with TV channels won’t necessarily be rolling out this functionality due to licensing issues.

However, with the recent introduction of the ability to include Ads right inside streaming video as illustrated by mDialog since April 2011, it would make sense for TV Channel iOS apps to provide AirPlay functionality, so that they can not only get the owner of the idevice to see their ad, but also everyone else who might watch the TV / screen / Computer that the video would be streamed to from the device.

Whenever you’re dealing with premium video content that’s going to be distributed online, the most important question is always about money. Or, rather, how exactly the TV show or film you’re distributing is actually going to make any….

But inserting ads into content isn’t always as easy as it seems, especially when you’re dealing with HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), which is typically used on iOS devices and plenty of other players. One company that’s working hard to change this is mDialog. The mobile video platform allows content owners to upload their assets, flag when in each video they want an ad to appear, and then distribute that content to users. And today the company is announcing that it’s added support for the Roku media player.

iPhone Wifi Hotspot on iOS 4.3 charges

After hearing the great news that iPhone Wifi Hotspot functionality is coming to the iOS4.3, you might be disappointed that it seems that the Mobile phone Carriers (at least in the UK and US it seems) wants to charge the same Tethering Fee in addition to your Data fee that you are already on

Many iPhone Users believe this is unfair and just not necessarily considering the loyalty of iPhone Users and that nearly no-one I’ve met has used up all their 3G data in a month.

How much will the wifi hotspot on your iPhone cost

If you click on the “Set Up Personal Hotspot” feature in iOS4.3 you are sent to:

http://www.o2.co.uk/assets/O2HybridNav/ … ltons.html

Where it states clearly that:

“nternet tethering lets you connect your iPhone to your computer and use it as a modem so you can get on the internet, a bit like mobile broadband. To use this you’ll need to be on an iPhone tariff and purchase an Internet Tethering Bolt On.
Bolt Ons for Pay Monthly

* 500MB – £7.50 a month (minimum 30 days)

Bolt Ons for Business & Corporate *

* Now £6.38 for 500MB as an additional allowance to your handheld bundle.

Jailbreak alternatives

If that is indeed the case it would make sense to jailbreak one of the iPhone (again) in your family or group of friends to get Hotspot functionality for only $20 once off.

Enabling the Wi-Fi Hotspot

Sure, if you’re running iOS 4.3 you can pay $US20 per month for a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone, but if you jailbreak you can pay $US20 just once to get the same functionality. My-Wi is a $US20 application that you can purchase in the Cydia store and makes nearly every tethering option you can imagine a possibility on your device. All you have to do is search for it in the Cydia store, purchase it, and install it. From there you just launch the app, click the Wi-Fi symbol, and turn your hotspot on.
